Welcome to our new website for the Physical Activity Coalition of Manitoba

Active Transportation

The Physical Activity Coalition of Manitoba envisions healthy, vibrant communities where citizens use Active Transportation as the preferred mode of travel in their daily routine as part of a healthy, active lifestyle year round.

Active Transportation (AT) is defined as any human-powered mode of transportation, such as walking, cycling, in-line skating, skateboarding, ice skating, cross-country skiing, etc.

The PACM AT Task Group has been active since 2004. The primary areas of focus have included:
  1. City of Winnipeg Active Transportation study – tracking progress and advocating implementation of the report’s recommendations as it moved through Council. Activities included submission of letters and briefs, and a presentation to the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works.
  1. City of Winnipeg Active Transportation Advisory Committee – PACM holds one of the five community seats on this committee, which was formed in July 2007.
  1. AT Position Paper and Backgrounder - development of an AT position paper that outlines PACM’s vision for Active Transportation in Manitoba along with the benefits of AT and recommendations on how to turn the vision into reality. This position paper is supported by an AT backgrounder document that outlines various research that supports the statements within the PACM position paper.

  1. Partnership building – hosted gatherings of “AT Champions” in spring and fall 2007, and subsequently fostered development of an Active Transportation Network in Manitoba.
  1. Education and promotion – hosted a public event that had presentations and information booths from different organizations on Active Transportation. This event included information on everything a person needs to know to get started actively commuting: gear, equipment, clothing, bike maintenance, route planning, fitting your bike, and fitness/health considerations.

Please see the Active Transportation Network page for links to AT resources and events.
